Dead Until Dark (Southern Vampire Mysteries #1)

What I enjoyed most about this book was its Southern small town feel. There's a hint of Gothic and a sense of something deeper and darker beneath the quaint small-town atmosphere. Other than that, the story is average urban fantasy fare. The childish/naive style of narration did it no favors. If it weren't for the vampire appeal, this book would have been just another mid-grade romance with a mystery running in the background.

What tragic cover art. If it weren't for True Blood, I don't think I'd consider picking up this book.
